My Eyes
I wear glasses. I have been wearing glasses since I was about 6 years old, I was told back in the day to only wear glasses when watching TV, when reading a book, writing etc and if I did this every time, by the time I am 18 I won't need them anymore. I am now nearly 21 and lost without them.
I have a lazy eye in my right. When I was the age of 5, my school did an eye test in all the children in 'Reception' first year of school, they knew that there was something wrong so my family took me to the opticians. I was told that it wasn't that bad at the time and to come back in a years time. It was too late. If they had picked it up back then, I would have worn an eye patch on my left, to make my right eye work the best but I didn't.
In about 2010, my opticians told me that I have a astigmatism in each eye, which means my eyes are shaped like a rugby ball rather than a football, which means I can't see as much - the vision is different. As you can see from the picture below.
At this time, I asked about laser eye surgery. I was told this wasn't possible because it would fix my left eye but not the lazy eye in the right. I left it. I just tried to get used to wearing glasses.
At the beginning of the year, a family friend of mine, went undergo a procedure called 'Lens Replacement', this means they replace the lens on your eye for a lens that suits your prescription. I decided to look into it and attended a free consultation at Optical Express this weekend.
'Lens Replacement' replaces the lens on your eyes but this for people over 40 because their focus doesn't work as much so, it wouldn't make much difference as the lens replacement doesn't help focus the eyes.
'Lens Implant' is where they add another lens on top of your own lenses in your eyes to improve your eyesight. This is for people of my age depending on situations.
I under went a variety of tests; it involved testing my prescription to make sure it was consistent, measuring my eyes, checking the muscles etc. At the end of this process, I was told that I wasn't suitable for 'Lens Implant', 'Lens Replacement' or 'Laser Eye Surgery'. I'm unsuitable for lens implant because I don't have enough room between my lens and my cornea. The optician I spoke to about this situation was very helpful as he gave me a detailed explanation of my eyes. Until technology evolves or I reach 40+, I am stuck with glasses unfortunately. I am definitely going to try wear contact lenses a lot more.
If you wear glasses and don't enjoy wearing them or wish there was something you could do. I would recommend attending the free consultation at Optical Express, to see if you eligible for Laser, Lens Replacement or Lens Implant. It doesn't cost you anything and it allows you to know what is wrong with your eyes and if they are able to be fixed.
